As a gamer you’ll commonly be asked “What are your favourite games?” My response will always include Sleeping Dogs. This action packed game most certainly has a cinematic flair! If you enjoy the classic Hong Kong action movies, you can appreciate this game even more. The game has a great story at it’s core alongside great martial arts combat, outlandish side missions and a superb soundtrack.
You play as Wei-Shen, an undercover cop whom is given the objective to takedown the infamous and well known Sun On Yee Triad. However, if that doesn’t sound like a big feat, Wei-Shen history makes it ever more complex. Shen was born in Hong Kong and grew up with his best friends Jackie Ma, Winston Chu and Sam “Dogeyes” Lin, all that are affiliated with the Sun On Yee gang. Wei moved to San Francisco from Hong Kong at the age of 10 with his mother and sister in an attempt to help overcome his sister’s drug addiction.
Wei joined the police force in San Francisco and later recruited for an undercover operation in Hong Kong. You’ll experience the breadth and height of Hong Kong’s underworld through glorious yet violent car chases, intense martial arts melee combat and detective work through surveillance and hacking. I felt this game emulated movies scenes from chasing down petty thieves to experiencing the brutal lifestyle of Triads. The game holds hours of fun missions, exploration, a Kung Fu School and quite often laughable moments from NPCs – “A man who never eats pork bun is NEVER a whole man!”
The game also has a varied selection of outfits, one being the most favourite – Bruce Lee’s Game of Death yellow jumpsuit. It also has a similar format as a GTA game with a radio selection whilst driving. Channeling still holds to be one of my favourites!
Sadly, a sequel to Sleeping Dogs seems unlikely and the online game of Triad Wars was cancelled. There has been news that there will be a Sleeping Dogs movie on the horizon, which is exciting but as of late, we haven’t heard much on it. I’ve always believed Joe Taslim makes a perfect Wei Shen. I tweeted to him a years ago, which he Quote RTed mentioning he loves the game. He was exceptional in the Raid movie and even more so in Bruce Lee’s original concept – Warrior TV series.

If you haven’t played Sleeping Dogs, I highly recommend getting the Definitive Edition – The game runs at native 1080p and features many graphical improvements, gameplay tweaks over the original game, as well as all of the extra content from the original. Unlike the original, where all DLC are accessed at any point in the game, Definitive Edition unlocks the DLCs once the player reaches their respective plots.
